I wrote a poem today

"Hold On"

I held hands with a stranger today-
Just for a moment as we passed-
A touch, by chance, of fingers to fingers-
The briefest of things, no time to react-
At least visibly, to dismiss or retract.
Only time to encounter and recognize-
For people were passing us on both sides,
And beyond them the buildings and windows and cars
This compact city, the world would've seen,
And we both had other places to be.
He had to go catch the tram, I think.
Buy a suit. Visit his wife.
I had to go home and write a poem
and then live out the rest of my life.
